Wheeler is one of those Oregon Coast towns you can drive through a dozen times without ever really stopping.
Highway 101 cuts right through the middle of this tiny community on Nehalem Bay, and with Manzanita just up the road and Rockaway Beach a few miles south, Wheeler has always been easy to overlook. That’s a shame, because this quiet little town has some genuinely great places tucked along the water.
And apparently, one of the best reasons to finally hit the brakes is smoked salmon.
We recently came across a discussion on a Lincoln City Facebook page where someone was looking for a good place to buy smoked salmon. For years, locals could stop at Mr. Bill’s Village Smokehouse, which operated in the same building as Dory Cove in Lincoln City. After the devastating 2024 fire that destroyed the building, that longtime option disappeared.
The question was simple: where do you even go now?
One answer kept coming up repeatedly and emphatically: NeahKahNie Smoke House in Wheeler.
Not just once, either. People were recommending it over and over, with some going so far as to call it the "best smoked salmon on the North Oregon Coast".
That was enough to immediately get our attention.
A Little Smokehouse Right on the Bay
NeahKahNie Smoke House sits just off Highway 101 near the waterfront.
It's exactly the kind of place that feels right at home in a town like this. Nothing flashy, nothing pretending to be something it isn't. You're in a small Oregon fishing community with Nehalem Bay right outside, and the focus here is pretty simple: really good smoked seafood.
The smokehouse specializes in locally caught salmon and other smoked fish, and its reputation clearly extends well beyond Wheeler. Travel Oregon describes it as a favorite among locals and visitors, while the Oregon Coast Visitors Association actually recommends calling before you make the trip because they sometimes sell out and close early.
That's a pretty encouraging problem for a small food business to have.
And despite its name, this isn't just a place selling a few vacuum-packed pieces of salmon from a cooler.
There's a ton of other good stuff happening here.
The Owners Aren’t Just Smoking the Salmon. They Fish, Too.
There’s another layer to NeahKahNie Smoke House that makes this little Wheeler business even more awesome. Owners Mike and Teresa aren’t simply standing behind the counter selling somebody else’s connection to the Oregon Coast. They’re fishermen themselves.
A post shared by the smokehouse gave the pair a National Bosses Day shoutout, affectionately calling them “Fish Slayers” and showing both Mike and Teresa holding impressive salmon they’d caught. The same post praised the countless hours they spend behind the scenes keeping the cases filled with smoked salmon and homemade specialties.
That doesn’t necessarily mean every piece of fish sold at NeahKahNie was personally pulled from the water by Mike or Teresa, but it does tell you something about the people behind the smokehouse. They’re genuinely connected to the fish, the water and the coastal lifestyle their shop represents.
NeahKahNie also got its start with a booth at the Manzanita Farmers Market before establishing its permanent home in Wheeler. Between the fishing, smoking, cooking and farmers market roots, this is absolutely the kind of small coastal business you hope to stumble across on Highway 101.
The Smoked Salmon Is Obviously the Star
The salmon is what gets most people through the door.
NeahKahNie keeps the basic recipe remarkably simple. Their smoked salmon is made using sugar, salt and, in their own words, "plenty of love". They also make candied salmon, smoked tuna, smoked mussels, smoked cheeses, dips and spreads.
Then you get into the stuff that makes it considerably harder to walk away with only one thing.
There's smoked salmon chowder.
Smoked salmon hand pies.
Smoked salmon sushi bakes.
Weekend bagels and desserts.
The chowder has even picked up an award along the way.
If you came looking for a simple package of salmon to snack on back at the hotel, this is beginning to look downright dangerous.
The customer reviews don't exactly help with self-control either. They repeatedly single out the smoked salmon, candied salmon and other smoked fish, and one reviewer summed up the loyalty pretty well by saying they drive down from Seaside specifically because they consider it the best smoked fish on the North Coast.
That's a roughly hour-long round trip for fish.
We take recommendations like that pretty seriously.
Salmon Candy Might Be the Sleeper Hit
If you've never had candied salmon, the name can be a little misleading.
We're not talking about some bizarre saltwater taffy experiment. Candied salmon generally takes that rich smoked fish and pushes it toward the sweeter side, creating a sticky, caramelized exterior while keeping the salmon underneath tender and smoky.
And this is one of NeahKahNie's specialties.
"Salmon candy" shows up constantly in comments and reviews about the smokehouse, alongside recommendations for the salmon belly, smoked black cod and tuna. One Reddit discussion about the place quickly turned into people swapping recommendations for the chowder, hand pies and other salmon creations.
It's the kind of shop where the original plan of "we'll just grab a little smoked salmon" can apparently turn into a bag full of things you didn't know existed ten minutes earlier.
That's usually how the best food stops go.
And Then There's Wheeler
The food may be what gets you off Highway 101, but Wheeler itself is worth slowing down for.
This is one of the smallest towns along this stretch of the North Oregon Coast, tucked between forested hills and Nehalem Bay. There's no giant beachfront promenade, no cluster of chain hotels and no major tourist attraction demanding your attention.
That's kind of the point.
Wheeler still feels like one of those old Oregon Coast towns where the scenery does most of the heavy lifting. The bay stretches out beside town, boats sit along the water, and the mountains rise immediately behind everything.
It's peaceful in a way that some of the busier coastal communities aren't anymore.
You can grab smoked salmon, wander around town for a while, check out the antique shops, look across Nehalem Bay and then continue north toward Manzanita or south toward Rockaway Beach and Tillamook.
Or don't continue anywhere for a while.
Wheeler isn't a bad place to linger.

Maybe Don't Wait Until Late Afternoon
There is one important thing to know before planning a special trip.
NeahKahNie Smoke House operates on a limited schedule, and selling out daily is a very real possibility.
The North Coast Food Trail currently lists regular hours as Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., while Google Maps also shows Thursday hours. Because seasonal schedules and unexpected closures can change, the smokehouse directs customers to its social media for sold-out and closure updates.
In other words, if you're driving an hour specifically because somebody on Facebook convinced you that you need smoked salmon, call ahead first.
That's especially true during summer and busy weekends.
One More Reason Not to Drive Straight Through Wheeler
We've always had a soft spot for the Oregon Coast places that don't scream for attention.
Wheeler is certainly one of them.
Thousands of travelers cruise through every year headed somewhere else, and most probably remember it as that little cluster of buildings where Highway 101 suddenly gets close to Nehalem Bay.
But sometimes all it takes is one really good local business to change how you see a town.
In this case, it might be smoked salmon.
So if you're mourning the loss of Lincoln City's old smokehouse, putting together a North Coast road trip, or you're simply one of those people who will happily detour for really good Oregon seafood, NeahKahNie Smoke House deserves a spot on the list.
