Join the MidCoast Watersheds Council for our September Community Meeting! This event will feature a presentation by Jon Sommer from the Lincoln County Mycological Society to learn about mushrooms of the Oregon Coast. You can attend either in-person at the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center OR online via Zoom. Zoom registration is on the event page. About the presentation: Ever wonder which mushrooms are safe to eat, and which ones will send you to the emergency room? We will look at the important edible species in our area, and some of the poisonous ones. As we tour through some of the various coastal habitats, we will get a sense of the enormous diversity and beauty of our coastal fungi. This talk will be engaging and informative for everyone from the novice mushroom hunter to the seasoned pro. About the speaker: Jon Sommer is a mycologist that has led mushroom forays, given lectures on a range of mycological topics, and taught mushroom identification across the U.S. for more than 5 decades. He is a well-known speaker and presenter for mycological Societies and Forays across the country. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Botany at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA and two Master’s Degrees from the University of California, Davis (Botany and Plant Pathology). A resident of Colorado for 30 years, and now living on the Oregon coast, Jon has in-depth knowledge of fungi across the US and particularly northern California and Oregon. He is the immediate Past President of the Colorado Mycological Society and is the current President of the Lincoln County Mycological Society in Oregon
